Accommodation at The Radnorshire Arms

Our Head Housekeeper Paula (right), and her assistant Pam, would like to take you on a tour of the Guest Rooms...

The Radnorshire Arms has nineteen guest rooms, 11 character rooms in the main building and 8 separate suites in the Garden Lodge. All our rooms are en suite and have colour TV, direct dial phone and tea and coffee making facilities, to name but a few.

Soon, we will also be introducing free, wireless internet access to all internal guest rooms. Current access is available in the ground floor public areas, the first floor Resident's Lounge and the Main Garden area only.

"The Resisdent's Lounge"
Whilst not a guest room as such, the Resident's Lounge lies at the top of the stairs to the first floor, and would probably have been the Master Bedroom when the original house was built over 500 years ago. This high, spacious room has a large bay window that overlooks the main garden, and windows to the front. A small side room sits above the hotel's main porch, and leading off of this is the 'priest hole' mentioned on our History Page. A pleasant place to sit and relax, with a generous selection of games and books provided, this is also used as a meeting room, or as a place for small private functions and informal corporate occasions.

The Guest Rooms

Below is a complete description of all of our rooms. The list includes a photograph, room type and occupuncy details, location, room name and additional notes.

All of our rooms are named after interesting or notable local villages or towns (with one exception), and links within the descriptions lead to more information on a particular place, event or person.

Our room tariff is given below, and our new on-line booking system is available here.

Room 2 - "Old Radnor"
A twin room on the 1st floor, 'Old Radnor' is one of the original 16th Century bedrooms. The hamlet after which this room is named lies near the English border, two miles from its 'new' neighbour and around ten miles south west of Presteigne. It has many reminders of its early past - Bronze Age tumuli, standing stones and the remains of its castle. The local church is said to be one of the six finest in Wales.
Room 3 - "Weobley"
This double room, which overlooks the garden, is the only other 16th Century bedroom and it retains its original Oak Panelling. Weobley itself is a beautiful, half timbered village in the English county of Herefordshire, around 13 miles south of the hotel. It is one of the villages on The Black and White Trail.
Room 4 - "Llanbister"
Llanbister is a large, twin room on the 1st floor, with tripple aspect views to the garden. An additional sofa bed makes it ideal for either three adults, or two adults and two children. Llanbister Village, with its 13th Century Church lies approximately 17 miles west of Presteigne near to the River Ithon.
Room 5 - "Llangunllo"
A double room on the 1st floor, with views over the rear garden. Situated some 8 miles west of the hotel, Llangunllo lies at the head of the Lugg Valley surrounded by 1300 ft mountain slopes. Close to the beautiful lake known as 'St Michael's Pool', the village boasts a church which is claimed to have foundations which date back to the 5th or 6th Century. This Link provides detailed information on the its architectural history.
Room 6 - "New Radnor"
A double room overlooking the formal gardens to the rear of the hotel. New Radnor is a large village on the south side of Radnor Forest which dates back to Norman times. This Link has some fascinating history on a town which was, for a time, the joint County Town of Radnorshire, along with Presteigne itself.
Room 7 - "Whitton"
Whitton is a double suite on the the first floor, and is also rear (or south west) facing. Around six miles from the hotel, and also in the Lugg Valley, the village is based around its bridge, one of the few over the river, and its church, a rebuilt structure that retains its original 15th Century font and Jacobean pulpit.
Room 8 - "Shobdon"
This twin room is the first room on the second floor, and is rear facing. The village of Shobdon is only a couple of miles from Presteigne, and is most famous for its truly remarkable church. It is also noteable for the aerodrome located behind The Bateman Arms pub. Pilots from the Glider Pilot regiment who trained here were heavily involved in the Normandy Landings of the 6th June 1944.
Room 9 - "Croft"
'Croft' is unusual in two ways, firstly, it is not one room but two, one double room and one twin room with a sofa bed allowing accommodation for 5 - 6 guests. Secondly, it is not named after a village or town, but a castle. Fortifications have been on the site since the 11th Century, though the current structure is more modern, and it remains the ancestral seat of the Croft Family. Now maintained by The National Trust, this splendid building with its rolling parkland is well worth a visit, and is only 10 miles east of the hotel.
Room 10 - "Pilleth"
This second floor, double room has a tripple aspect overlooking the main gardens. While no more than a hand full of houses and farm buildings, the hamlet of Pilleth has a rich if somewhat troubled history. Most noted as the site of the Battle that saw Edmund Mortimer's English army crushed by the Welsh under Owain Glyndwr. An account of the 'Battle of Bryn Glas' can be found here.
Room 11 - "Kinsham"
A second floor, double room overlooking the rear garden. The village of Kinsham is in Herefordshire and perches on the Welsh border. The local Kinsham Court has, in its time, seen some famous residents; Lord Byron and Florence Nightingale to name but two.
Room 12 - "Lingen"
Room 12 is the last to be situated in the main building, and is another double room with rear aspect. Lingen village lies about five miles across the Welsh border in the county of Herefordshire. Occupied since at least the Middle Ages, there is evidence of a 'Motte and Bailey' castle within the village. More information can be found here.

The Garden Lodges

Rooms 14 - 21 are located in the Garden Lodge. Built in the 1970's, the Lodge lies in the formal gardens between the top car park and the rear entrance to the hotel, to which it has access via a short, covered walkway.

All rooms in the Lodge are family rooms and, with the exception of bed configuration and decor, are identical. All are ensuite and equiped to the same high standards as the main rooms. The Lodge is offered on a 'per room, per night' basis only (with an additional charge for breakfast, see below), and well behaved dogs are welcomed.
