Our new page gives information on, and links to, places of interest
in and around Presteigne. We are extending our History
Page to cover the surrounding area, and this will be posted shortly
as we are still researching the information.
Our Accommodation Page is also a source of
local information. Our rooms are named after nearby towns and villages,
and the room descriptions contain brief details of each location, as
well as links to further information on a particular place or event
where appropriate (and available).
The Official Presteigne Web Site:
A good place to start, the site lists some places of interest, local
businesses, organisations and other local facts and figures. They provide
a 'Town
Trail' map (previewed above) which you can download directly
from here.
Wikipedia also
has a some interesting details, and due to the nature of the site it
is continually growing. They have a page on Radnorshire as
well, and is a recommended read.
Most of our historic research comes from the above pages, and two
other useful resources: The
Judge's Lodging, web site of the local Victorian Museum, and the
Powys Heritage On-Line Project,
a magnificent reference (in English and Welsh) with many old photographs.
Leisure Activities
Cycling: Without a doubt, one of the best ways to
explore the quiet roads through the hills and valleys of the Welsh
Borders is on a bike. Presteigne has its own "Cycle
Break Centre" offering
5 local rides of between 9 and 33 miles.
The Powys Tourism Web Site also has lots of useful information on more
adventurous routes such as the 86 mile Radnor Ring... Not for the feint
hearted! Less than a mile down the road is Herefordshire, and their
website also has some useful information for cyclists and walkers
alike.
Walking: If
you prefer to avoid roads altogether, then walking is another healthy,
environmentally friendly way of enjoying our beautiful countryside.
There are many walks, both Guided and Mapped, which cover the surrounding
hills, valleys and other natural attractions, and again, the lengths
vary to suit your preference or ability levels.
Powys
Tourism can again be relied on to provide details of the Welsh
walks, whilst the Herefordshire link given above covers the other side
of the border.
Fishing: There are many rivers and lakes around
the area, and different swims are open at different times of the year.
We also have our own virgin lake about 30 minutes drive away, and fishing
here is by prior arrangement only. Please contact Reception for
details.
Golf: The closest Golf Courses are at Kington, Leominster and Ludlow.
Horse Riding: The 'Heart
of Wales Riding School' at Pen-y-bont (01597 851 884) offers
treks across the moors, or to pubs. Alternatively there is the
'Sue
Adams Riding School' at Shobdon.
Racecourses: There is a National
Hunt course at Ludlow, and another in
Hereford. Both hold regular meets throughout the year.
Leisure Centre: The East
Radnor Leisure Centre is
just a five minute walk from the hotel, and offers swimming, a fitness
suite, sunbeds and a sports hall. Tel: 01544 260 302.
Rally Driving: For a more 'High Octane' experience
Powys boasts one of the countries leading Rally Driving Schools,
and it's only around 9 miles northwest of the hotel. So if you would
rather flash through the countryside than look at it (or collide
with large lumps of it!), then The
Phil Price Rally School should be right up your street...
or dirt track.
The Presteigne Business
Directory is a new site which aims to provide free advertising
to help promote local businesses, and we are proud to support this
worthwhile venture.
Whilst the Hotel is in Powys in Wales, it is literally yards from
England and the counties of Herefordshire and Shropshire.
This information will continue to grow over the coming months. If
you have a recommendation for a site, or further information that you
feel you may be of interest to our visitors, please contact us via
our 'Webmaster'.
